The Difference Between ABL and PBL Tubes for Oral Care Products

February 21, 2019

As the demand for eco-friendly, recyclable packaging increases, corporations are looking for more sustainable options to package their products. When it comes to oral care products such as toothpaste, there are two main types of tubes that are used: ABL (aluminum barrier laminate) and PBL (plastic barrier laminate). While both options offer product preservation benefits, there are key differences to consider when choosing between them. Let's take a closer look at each of these two tube materials.

ABL Tubes

ABL tubes contain an aluminum foil layer that acts as an oxygen barrier, protecting the product from outside air and moisture while also extending its shelf life. This type of tube is usually lined with plastic or paper on either side of the aluminum sheet and sealed with a plastic cap. The  aluminum layer provides protection against oxidation, allowing products to remain fresh. The downside is that these tubes may be harder to recycle due to their multi-material composition.

PBL Tubes

PBL tubes are made from several layers of plastic films that provide a strong oxygen barrier to keep products fresh for longer periods of time. PBL tubes tend to be much lighter than ABL tubes since they don’t contain any metal layers. They also have excellent printability properties which allow brands to create eye-catching designs for their products' packaging without compromising on quality or performance. Due to their mono-material construction, PBL are widely recyclable with makes them a better environmentally friendly choice.

In conclusion, both ABL and PBL tubes offer distinct advantages when it comes to packaging oral care products like toothpaste or mouthwash. While both ABL and PBL tubes provide protection against oxidation, PBL ones have lighter weight and better printability and recyclability properties which make them attractive options for brands looking for aesthetically pleasing packages and eco-friendliness. Ultimately, choosing between the two will depend on your individual needs and budget constraints so it’s important to take into consideration all the pros and cons before making a decision!
